About Test:

It is a renal function test to assess volume status, salt intake, and causes of hypokalemia. This test helps to evaluate chloride concentration in patients. The increased chloride levels in urine indicate postmenstrual diuresis, Massive diuresis from any cause, Salt-losing nephritis, Potassium depletion, Adrenocortical insufficiency (Addison’s disease), Tubulointerstitial disease & Batter syndrome.

The decreased chloride levels indicate, Premenstrual salt and water retention, Excessive extrarenal chloride loss, Adrenocortical hyperfunction, Postoperative chloride retention, etc.

Medical condition:

This test helps to measure urine chloride concentration in a patient who seems to be volume depleted but has a somewhat elevated urine sodium concentration. It aids in the diagnosis of renal tubular acidosis. It evaluates electrolyte composition of urine and acid-base balance studies. It is helpful to measure urine chloride in patients with a normal anion gap metabolic acidosis. In the absence of renal failure, this may be due to diarrhea or one of the forms of Renal tubular acidosis.

1) What is the technique used for this test?

24hrs urine Chloride test is performed using an Ion-selective electrode. For 24-Hour Urine (mmol/day), the reference range differs as per age group for both male & female patients.

2) What is diuresis?

Cerebral salt wasting (CSW) is a syndrome of hypovolemic hyponatremia caused by natriuresis and diuresis. The mechanisms underlying CSW have not been precisely delineated, although existing evidence strongly implicates abnormal elevations in circulating natriuretic peptides.

Potassium deficiency, or Hypokalaemia, is a condition in which a person does not get enough potassium for their body. It can be due to a poor diet or loss due to diarrhoea or vomiting. Potassium deficiency can result in medical conditions like high blood pressure, constipation, muscle weakness, and fatigue.
