About Test:

This panel of tests helps to test stool samples for the various causes of gastroenteritis, which is essentially infection of the digestive tract. The infections may be caused by is for detection of causative organism of diarrhea due to bacteria, viruses or parasites. It includes tests for 12 bacteria, 4 parasites and 5 viruses that may have caused the infection. This panel is recommended as it provides a definitive diagnosis in 3 hours.

BIOFIRE^® FILMARRAY^® GI Panel targets:

Campylobacter
This test detects the campylobacter bacteria that frequently causes diarrhea with bloody stools. It can also lead to stomach pains, fever, headaches and nausea as accompanying symptoms.

Clostridium difficile
This test detects the Clostridium difficile bacteria that frequently causes diarrhea with abdominal pain. It is frequently seen in those that have recently been treated with antibiotics.

Plesiomonas shigelloids
This test detects the Plesiomonas shigelloids bacteria that frequently causes diarrhea in those who consume contaminated  raw seafood.

Salmonella
This test detects the salmonella bacteria that frequently causes intestinal infections in those exposed to contaminated water and food. Symptoms include bloody stools, diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, headaches and fevers.

Yersinia enterocolitica
This test detects the bacteria that causes yersiniosis. This disease is characterized by diarrhea, infection in the intestines, as well as the appendix.

Vibrio species
This test detects the bacterial species causing vibriosis in the gastrointestinal system. Vibriosis is characterize by watery diarrhea, fever, chills and stomach cramps.

EAEC
This test detects Enteroaggregative E. Coli bacteria that may live in the digestive tract. This bacteria leads to acute diarrhea, stomach cramping and vomiting. It is commonly seen in developing countries, as well as in those with compromised immune systems.

ETEC
This test detects Enterotoxigenic E. Coli bacteria that may live in the digestive tract. It leads to acute watery diarrhea, fever, vomiting, chills, headache, muscle aches, and bloating. It is usually seen in developing countries, especially in children exposed to contaminated food and water.

EPEC
This test detects Enteropathogenic E. Coli bacteria that may live in the digestive tract. It may or may not lead to severe diarrhea and is commonly seein in developing countries.

EIEC
This test detects Enteroinvasive E. Coli bacteria that may live in the digestive tract. It leads to dysentery, which is characterized by abdominal pain and stool with mucus and blood.

Escherichia coli:
This test detects E. Coli bacteria that may live in the digestive tract. This bacteria leads to bloody diarrhea, stomach cramping and vomiting. In severe cases, it may impair the function of the kidneys and lead to urinary tract infections.

O157:
This test detects the Shiga toxin producing Escherichia coli of the O157 type. These bacteria can damage the lining of the intestines as well as the kidneys. The symptoms include bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramps and little or no fever.

STEC:
This test detects the Shiga toxin producing Escherichia coli of both the O157 and non O157 type. These bacteria can damage the lining of the intestines as well as the kidneys. The symptoms include bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramps and little or no fever.

Cryptosporidium:
This test detects Cryptosporidium,  a parasite that causes gastrointestinal infections. The symptoms of infection with this parasite are stomach cramps, watery diarrhea, dehydration, weight loss, fever and nausea.

Cyclospora cyatenensis:
This test detects Cyclospora cyatenensis, a parasite that causes gastrointestinal infections. The symptoms of infection with this parasite are stomach cramps, watery diarrhea, dehydration, weight loss, fever, loss of hunger, bloating and nausea. It is commonly seen in developing countries upon exposure to contaminated food and water.

Entamoeba histolytica:
This test detects Entamoeba histolytica, a parasite that causes gastrointestinal infections. The most common symptoms of this infection is watery diarrhea. However, this parasite also eats away at intestinal cells, and can be dangerous to life.

Giardia lamblia:
This test detects Giardia lamblia, a parasite that causes gastrointestinal infections. The symptoms of infection with this parasite are stomach cramps, watery, foul smelling diarrhea or greasy stools, fatigue and weight loss.

Adenovirus:
This test detects the adenovirus, which commonly causes the flu and other respiratory infections, as well as pink eye. However, it may also infect the digestive system, causing diarrhea with stomach cramps.

Astrovirus:
This test detects the astrovirus, which commonly causes diarrheal infections. However, compared to other viruses, the symptoms produced are very mild.

Norovirus:
This test detects the astrovirus, which causes diarrhea, accompanied by fever, headaches, muscle aches and severe vomiting.

Rotavirus:
This test is used to detect the rotavirus, which infects the gastrointestinal tract, especially in children. It causes black or tarry stools that may contain blood or pus, stomach aches, high fever, dehydration, irritability, fatigue and vomiting.

Sapovirus:
This test detects the sapovirus, which is a common cause for gastrointestinal infections. The most common symptoms of this infection is watery diarrhea.
