The Sperm DNA fragmentation test is used to calculate the amount of breaking down of DNA that occurs in the sperm within a sample of semen produced by a male. DNA is a very important part of the sperm. It passes on your characteristics to a newborn child. There is always some breaking down of DNA during sperm production. However, the amount cannot be too high.
What is DNA?
DNA is the genetic material. It transfers our characteristics to our child in the form of genes It is extremely complex and made up of several proteins that represent our traits. These are passed on to our children during fertilization. However, if the DNA in the reproductive cells (sperm and ova) are fragmented, conceiving a child can be harder.
What increases the risk of DNA fragmentation?
In addition to natural fragmentation, stress caused by free elements within the body can lead to a breaking down of DNA in the sperm. This is related to:
- Stress
- Fever or inflammations
- Excess smoking and alcohol use
- Recreational drug use
- Using bodybuilding supplements
- Sexually transmitted infections
Sample:
At our clinic in Mumbai, a semen sample is needed. The sample has to be given by visiting our laboratory.
Results:
Results from this test are delivered 3 days after collection of the sample.
Price: Rs. 4,500 /-
Test preparation:
Abstinence of 4 days
Result Interpretation:
DNA FRAGMENTATION INDEX(%DFI)
DNA INTEGRITY-:
Reference Range:
- Excellent to Good fertility potential: < 15 % DFI
- Good to Fair fertility potential: 15- 25 % DFI
- Fair to poor fertility potential: 26 - 50 % DFI
- Very poor Sperm DNA integrity: > 50 % DFI
The probability of a successful pregnancy is significantly reduced if the DFI is > 25 %. Studies suggest that men with > 25 % DFI take a longer period for natural pregnancy, require more IVF cycle, have an increased rate of spontaneous abortions or no pregnancy.
